Okehampton, Devon. About ½ mile West, picturesque on a knoll above the river close to the A30, are the ruins of what was one of the largest and most important castles in Devon. Mainly l3th century, it was the home of the Courtenays (Earls of Devon) before they moved to Powderham. It looks especially good from the golf course on the hillside opposite. From the Army camp on the hill-top (1½ miles South) a road, usable when there is no firing (watch for red flags or ask at the town Post Office), makes a loop 3 miles long into the wild heart of the moor, where tiny valleys make good picnic spots.
