Chagford, Devon, is a popular, affluent, friendly small town with smart shops. It is admirably situated in the soft lea of Dartmoor with the beautiful River Teign at its feet and is attractive — if seldom architecturally distinguished — round its square. In the last century it was the first of the towns on the edge of the moor to gain a tourist trade. Its best looking buildings date from the Middle Ages when, from 1305, it was a stannary town and span wool. They include a nearly faultless 15th century granite church and, side by side, the former Church House and Three Crowns. In the porch of the latter during the Civil War the poet Godolphin was shot. He is said to haunt it. Another shooting incident, in the churchyard, is said to have given Blackmore the idea for the wounding of Lorna in his Lorna Doone. A local guide-book details numerous excellent walks, also old farm-houses worth seeing. There is a fine view from Meldon Hill, just South. The way to Kestor Rock, 2½ miles South West, passes good examples of prehistoric hut circles, and Fernworthy Reservoir, in a fir forest 3 miles South West, is a nice place. At Gidleigh, 2 miles West, is a fragment of a Norman castle. The Chagford Pony Fair is held in October.
About 3½ miles South East, Moretonhampstead is very different in character from Chagford but no less attractive or cheerful. It, too, has a fine l5th century granite church and a famous row of 1637 almshouses (beside the road out to Exeter). Its carnival in late August is one of Devon's most enterprising.
