Visit Newbiggin-by-the-Sea and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Newbiggin-by-the-sea, Northumberland. Just a few of the many brightly coloured cobles, the characteristic inshore fishing-boats of the North-East, that used to cover the shore of Newbiggin bay still fish off here today. The old Herring House, where the daily catch was washed and sold, is gone, too. The men of the sea now work in the neighbouring mines or new industries, or cater for the visitors who seek sea air here. Newbiggin offers a promenade, a golf course and a caravan site near the Town Moor. St Bartholomew's Church with its landmark of a 14th-century stone spire, stands dangerously close to the cliffs on the north-eastern tip of the bay. it goes back to the 13th century. At some later date both aisles were removed. The north aisle was restored about 1910. Several medieval tombstones have been set in the north wall. In the Second World War, mines exploding on the rocks below damaged the roof and windows, since repaired.
