Nairn, Highland. This popular seaside resort, known as the “Brighton of the North”, has splendid beaches, a famously sunny climate, and several golf courses. It is a convenient centre for coastal and inland touring. The town stands on the border of the Highlands and Lowlands, and at one time Gaelic was spoken at the South West end and English at the North East end. Dr Johnson visited it in the course of his Scottish tour, and here for the first time saw peat fires and heard the Celtic tongue. The harbour was built in 1820 to Telford's plan and has since been enlarged.
About 3 miles South of Nairn is Rait Castle, built in the early 15th century, and notable for its round tower. Although now lacking a roof and floor, it is otherwise remarkably complete. Here the Mackintoshes massacred the Comyns in 1424. On the eastern outskirts of the town is Balblair. Here is the site where the Duke of Cumberland (“Butcher” or “Sweet William”, as you care to call him) encamped before marching to defeat the Jacobites under Prince Charles Edward Stuart at Culloden in 1746.
