Grantown-on-Spey, Highland, to the North East of Aviemore, is one of Speyside's principal residential resorts for holidays in summer and winter. Planned by Sir James Grant, one of the improving lairds of the Highlands, the town has a pleasant, spacious aspect typical of Georgian development in the latter half of the 18th century. It first attracted the tourist trade, which is now the basis of its economy, about a century ago when Victorian doctors began to prescribe a change of air in Grantown as a cure for most ills. In more recent times it has grown as a centre for salmon fishing on the Spey, and has long been patronized by Edinburgh families who walk and play golf and seek recreation in the open air. Skiing is now a major preoccupation during the winter season. A ski-school and a sports shop provide instruction and a service of equipment hire, and transport to the Cairngorm snow-slopes is arranged. There are attractive walks along the river, to the viewpoint North West of the town, to Beachen Wood, among others, and such longer expeditions as the climb of Glen Beg or the 16 mile round trip to Lochindorb. The Moray coast between Nairn and Elgin is within easy reach by car, and the town is at the northern end of the Tomintoul — Cockbridge road that links Speyside with Deeside.
