Knighton, Powys. The county has many small and secluded towns set in the long valleys that run from Radnor Forest towards the Herefordshire levels. Of these, Knighton is one of the most charming. The coach-road guides of the early 19th century give little about it except - whether they describe the route to Presteigne, Ludlow, or Kington — the advice “Cross the Teme river”. For this is where Knighton lies, in the meadows of the young Teme with low and rounded hills on both sides. It is a steep descent and rise to and from the town, by way of Cwm Whitton Hill or Bailey Hill, for Pilleth or Bleddfa. Knighton itself is on a small rise between the hills; its church, double-naved and with a Norman tower, has the timbered belfry typical of Herefordshire villages. The cluster of houses lies close, still with a native solidity of companionship in no way disturbed by the lift of houses along the further hill-slopes. Walton (Welsh Town) and Bleddfa, with its l3th century church; the Shropshire side of the Teme, with Leintwardine and its lovely old bridge; Clun Forest and its valleys folded against time; Pilleth and Casgob, with their recollections of history — all these lie within easy reach of Knighton.
