Clun, Shropshire, is one of A. E. Housman's “four quietest places under the sun”; the others are the nearby Clun valley villages of Clunton, Clunbury and Clungunford. This small town was not always peaceful and evidence of its stormy history is all around. Caractacus, the Ancient British chief, resisted the Romans hereabouts: Gaer Ditches is thought to have been one of his camps. A few miles West is Offa's Dyke, the 8th-century earthwork which runs 81 miles through the border country and was part boundary mark, part Mercian fortification against the Welsh. It was around Clun that Edric the Wild, the English earl, harried the Normans whose castle keep stands high in a bend of the River Clun. For centuries, Cluri was disputed between the English and the Welsh: four times between 1195 and 1400 the Welsh attacked the castle and burned the town.

Clun was a settlement before recorded time. In the museum - once the town gaol - in the Georgian Town Hall are flint and stone tools, weapons and the partial Cremation of a Bronze Age inhabitant. At Pen y Wern, a little to the South West, stand the ruins of a stone circle.
