Kirkoswald, South Ayrshire, is an old village about 4 miles South of Maybole. It contains the ruins of a pre-Reformation kirk replaced in 1777 by the present building, which was designed by Robert Adam at the behest of the Earl of Cassiffis. In the middle of the village street stands Soutar Johnnie's cottage, now preserved by the National Trust for Scotland. Soutar Johnnie, alias John Davidson the village Soutar or cobbler in the late 18th century, was, of course, one of the characters in Burns's Tam o' Shanter, referred to under Maidens. The graves of the two cronies Tam and Johnnie are in the kirkyard. The cottage contains a varied collection of Burnsiana and contemporary tools of the cobbler's craft; it is an interesting reflection of the ways of village life in Burns's day. In the small garden behind the cottage life-size stone figures of the Soutar, Tam, and the ever-hospitable Innkeeper and his wife sit in silent tableau: these are the work of a local self-taught sculptor, James Thom.
