Kilkerran, South Ayrshire, a mansion house in the Girvan Valley, is the seat of Sir James Fergusson of Kilkerran, Baronet, chief of his name. The house was built around an older tower in 1695—1700, and enlarged in 1814—15, but the Kilkerran lands have been associated with the Fergusson family since the early 15th century; Sir James is one of the few landowners who today retain and occupy lands held by their family in continuous succession for more than 500 years. The Fergussons of Kilkerran played a notable part in the efflorescent intellectual life of Scotland during the latter half of the 18th century. Lord Hermand of the Kilkerran Fergussons (the Scottish Judge) is remembered for his aphorisms and for his character, notable even in that age of highly individual characters. In modern times, three members of the family have been governors-general of New Zealand. Kilkerran lies about 2½ miles North of Dailly.
