Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, is the administrative centre of Scotland's most populous county, although it is by no means the largest in area. Hamilton was made a royal burgh in 1548; Mary Queen of Scots stayed in the town after her escape from Loch Leven and before Langside. Cromwell had his H.Q. there in 1651.
Hamilton Palace, once the seat of the Dukes of Hamilton, was built in 1822—9 on the site of an earlier house; it contained a superb collection of paintings and furniture sold by auction in 1862. It was demolished in 1927.
To the South of the town in High Parks is the site of Cadzow Castle, picturesquely situated above the Avon. It had been a royal residence since the 10th century and was given by Bruce to the Hamilton family after Bannockburn. In the parks there are some of the original wild white cattle of the Caledonian Forest.
At Barncluith House, built in the 16th century, are to be seen some interesting Dutch terraced gardens planned in 1583. Chatelherault Lodge (the Duke of Hamilton is also the Duke of Chatelherault in France) was designed by William Adam, who was also the architect of the octagonal parish church of the town in 1732. Opposite the church is the Celtic Netherton Cross.
