Gosport, Hampshire, was for a long time merely a fishing hamlet, but it then became famous for yacht and boat building and also as a victualling station for the Navy. One of its most famous citizens was Henry Cort of Lancaster. In the 18th century he set up his forge for iron puddling here, and the resultant discoveries eventually gave a huge fillip to the pig-iron industry.

The town was greatly damaged during the war and huge new buildings now line the seashore. Nearby is the Church of the Holy Trinity, originally late l7th-century but rebuilt in the 19th century. Inside is an organ which once belonged to the Duke of Chandos and on which Handel composed some of his music.

Gosport Railway Station was designed by Sir William Tite, and between 1842, when it was built, and 1847 it also served Portsmouth. Although badly damaged by fire and not used now, part remains, including the south façade with its splendid colonnades. Queen Victoria used to come here on her way to Cowes on the Isle of Wight, and a special line ran from Gosport Station to the former Royal Railway Station, which now lies in the Royal Clarence Victualling Yard belonging to the Navy. Although some buildings remain, both platform and tracks have disappeared.
