Filey, North Yorkshire. Filey Brigg is a mile-long rocky reef jutting out from the Carr Naze headland at the top of Filey Bay. Half of the brigg is under water and the rest gives anglers, picnickers and geologists endless happy hours. It is a coralline oolite ridge topped with boulder clay. Weather and erosion have carved it into ledges, coves, caves, cliffs and pools. The waves hammer it mercilessly in stormy weather, sending up seething clouds of spray. The Romans left traces and it may have provided them with an anchorage. From it you can look South to Flamborough Head and North to Scarborough Castle.
It forms a natural pier and breakwater for Filey, part old-world fishing village and part modern holiday resort with promenade, gardens and long sandy beach. Most of the town stands on the cliff top with a fine outlook over the crescent bay. Wooded Church Ravine runs up from the sea and above it stands St Oswald's Church which belonged until 1537 to the Augustinian canons of Bridlington. Its oldest parts date to the late 12th century. There is a fishermen's memorial window to those lost at sea and a “weatherfish” on the heavy square tower. The Roman Catholic Church of St Mary is in the form of an ancient basilica with an altar in 6th-century. Italian style and a mosaic on the east end. Charlotte Brontë often stayed at Cliff House, now a café.
