Edlingham, Northumberland. Little St John's Church is so plain and sturdy that it is easy to mistake it for a farm building when it is viewed across the valley from the scenic Alnwick road. It stands in trees on the hillside just above the ruins of a l4th-century castle, and both stand apart from the small village further up the slope. The church is mainly Norman, with a square tower and slit windows. It must have afforded protection in the days of border raiding. The first church on the site was probably wooden and built in the 8th century. The stone building began in about 1050 and the west wall of the nave dates to this time. The wide round chancel arch, the chancel itself and the beautiful north aisle arcade are 12th-century. Fragments from earlier times include part of a sculptured cross in a recess below the pulpit and the base of the font.

Edlingham was the home of an alleged witch, Margaret Stothard, in the 17th century. She was never punished, perhaps because the charges against her were so flimsy. In 1879 the vicarage burglary brought other notoriety to the village. Two men were wrongly convicted and served 10 years in prison before the real culprits were brought to justice. The case inspired the novel, The Massingham Affair, by John Grierson.
