Corsham, Wiltshire. The town of Corsham has grown considerably in recent years, and there is a lot of modem development. But the centre retains its old character with 17th-and l8th-century golden-stone houses, old weavers' cottages and the Hungerford Almshouses.
The Church of St Bartholomew dates back to the 12th and 15th centuries, but suffered greatly at the hands of the Victorian restorers. However, the l5th-century screen is interesting, and in the churchyard lies Sarah Jones who died in 1753 aged 107. “Some time before her death she had fresh teeth”, adds the headstone.
Nearby stands Corsham Court, its history stretching back to Anglo-Saxon times. The estate belonged to the Royal family, and then later traditionally became part of the dower of the queens of England. In 1582 it was sold to Thomas Smythe - or Customer Smythe as Aubrey calls him, because he grew rich from customs dues collected in London. He built an attractive Cotswold house with gables and mullioned windows, much of which remains today. In 1777 the house was bought by Paul Methuen, in the expectation of inheriting a collection of pictures from his cousin, Sir Paul Methuen. Capability Brown, known more as a landscape gardener than as an architect, was commissioned to make alterations and add a picture gallery to the existing house. Later, in 1800, John Nash added another gallery, but much that he built in Strawberry Hill Gothic style suffered from damp, and was later altered by Bellamy.
