Cannock, Staffordshire, now a thriving industrial town, owed its existence originally to Cannock Chase, lying to the North. It is more than likely that there was a small settlement of some kind 1,000 years and more ago; and to the North East of the town is an area of about 18 acres known as Castle Ring which was an Iron Age encampment.

There was a church on the site of the present St Luke's Parish Church in the 12th century, and a few traces of that original building remain. The church was rebuilt in the 14th century, and has several times been altered and restored since. A more curious and unusual building is the Tank House. Built of brick, hexagonal and with a pyramid roof, this was where the pipe bringing Cannock's first secure water supply, in 1736, came out.

One of the most attractive buildings is the white l8th century former mansion which houses the Council offices — and next to it is one of the most perfect bowling greens in the Midlands, which has been in constant use for more than 170 years. Within easy reach of the town, on the edge of Cannock Chase, is the famous Beaudesert Golf Club; and the nearby Hednesford Hills are good for walks.
