Calne, Wiltshire. The wool trade was once the principal industry here, now it is bacon. After a history of some 1,000 years Caine remains a market town and still holds weekly markets. There are some good Georgian buildings and the church, in Perpendicular style, is impressive. It has an imposing l2th-century nave, and a fine 17th-century Gothic tower which replaced the one that fell in 1638.
