Brechfa, Carmarthenshire. Although only 9 miles North East of Carmarthen, Brechfa, hidden in a bend of the Cothi valley, might be one of the most out-of-the-way villages in South Wales. It has an air of secluded happiness. The little hamlet consists of a small bell-cote Victorian church, built by Lingen Baker in 1891; the foursquare rectory beside a lane leading down to a ford; the Forest Arms fishing inn, covered with creeper; a remarkable, thick-walled medieval house: a well-proportioned chapel; and some additional dwellings, which include council houses. All seem to fit into the deeply wooded landscape. The roads that lead out of Brechfa go through lonely woods or valleys. The Forestry Commission has been active in this area for many years, and the Brechfa Forest is now mature. The road to the East follows the Cothi up to Abergorlech, the one to the North climbs up through the plantations and Gwernogle out to the open mountain behind Llanybydder in the Teifi valley. The western road makes a narrow cut through a hill-side, deeply wooded, over to the headwaters of the Afon Gwili. About 5 miles West of Brechfa is Llanllawddog, with a simply proportioned Victorian church and a polite notice: “This Churchyard is committed to the tender care of all who enter”. The southern exit from the wooded bowl of Brechfa passes over the hill to Nantgaredig in the Towy valley. There is a group of standing stones 1½ miles due South.
