Braintree, Essex, grew up as a town placed at the junction of important Roman roads, Stane Street running east to west and, crossing it from south west to north east the Chelmsford to Sudbury road, and also on the River Blackwater. Like its neighbour Bocking, into which it gradually merges, it has derived its prosperity from the silk trade founded by the Courtaulds, which followed on the wool trade of an earlier age. Its other great industry is the making of metal windows which was established by Francis Crittal in 1884 and which has since developed into a very important international enterprise. Another famous Braintree character was Nicholas Udall (1505-56) who, after being dismissed from his post as headmaster of Eton, became vicar of Braintree in 1537. It was possibly at about the time he became headmaster of Westminster School (1554) that he wrote the first known English comedy, Ralph Roister Doister.
The Church of St Michael the Archangel has a good l3th-century tower with a shingled broach spire, but the rest of the exterior is mainly 19th-century. Inside is a chapel built by Udall. Braintree itself has a town hall built 1926-8
