Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Aylesbury's name dates from the Anglo-Saxon age though its history goes back to around 650BC. During these times it was a major market town. It was famous as the burial place of Saint Osyth. In 1086, the listing in the Domesday Book showed that William the Conqueror took the manor of Aylesbury for himself.
Aylesbury became the county town of Buckinghamshire in 1529 on King Henry VIII's declaration.
During the English Civil War it was a stronghold for the Parliamentarian forces.
Chequers, the country residence of the Prime Minister of the UK since 1921, is just outside Aylesbury.
