Amroth, Pembrokeshire. In this seaside village 5 miles from Tenby, the few houses face their enemy the sea and a long bank of pebbles, beyond which lie fine sands at low tide. When the tide comes in during winter storms, it has a habit of washing the road and an odd house or two into the sea. Long lines of groynes try to protect the road. Holiday bungalows climb the green hill behind the beach. The Amroth Inn is Georgian. Amroth Castle is a late l8th century house with castellated trimmings, behind a long wall on the sea-front. It is one of the numerous places in these parts that were proud to welcome Lord Nelson during his South Wales tour of 1802. The Castle grounds are now a caravan park. At very low tide the stumps of a submerged forest are visible in the sands. The old practice of bathing in the nude on a certain day of the year, referred to by Sir John Rhys, the great Celtic scholar, has long since been discontinued; all ablutions are now very proper in Amroth. The church lies some way inland. It has been restored and enlarged, but still contains some interesting monuments. Colby Lodge, in a charming little wooded valley, was designed by John Nash.
