Alva, Clackmannanshire, on the Stirling—Milnathort road, is one of the pleasant small Hillfoots' towns that lie in the Devon valley along the base of the Ochils. Its immediate neighbours East and West are Tillicoultry and Menstrie.
The river was the original source of power on which the town's woollens trade was developed. Shawls, scarves, and rugs, all finely woven and including a fair amount of tartan in design, are the specialities of Alva's mills. Local benefactors have provided over the years a full complement of recreational amenities, and the glen behind the town has one of the county's leading tourist attractions. Known as the Silver Glen, from 18th century mineral workings, its lower reaches have been laid out in walks and gardens. The glen, which has a fine waterfall cascade at its head, also offers a route to the summit of Ben Cleuch (2,363 ft), the highest of the Ochils. This hill commands far views stretching from the Grampians to Merrick, and its summit cairn was once a popular rendezvous for those who wished to see the rising of the midsummer sun.
