Menstrie, Clackmannanshire, is a hill-foot village at the western end of the Ochils, and is the usual starting-point for the ascent of Dumyat (1,375 ft). A pleasant glen, from which Menstrie Burn runs to join the River Devon, divides Dumyat from Myretoun Hill and is an agreeable base for children's picnic expeditions.
Menstrie Castle, built in the 16th century, was the birthplace of the poet and founder of Nova Scotia, Sir William Alexander, and of Sir Ralph Abercromby, hero of Aboukir Bay.
Restored as housing accommodation by Clackmannan County Council, the Castle's association with Nova Scotia is marked by two commemoration rooms featuring a heraldic display of 107 coats of arms carried by the baronets of Nova Scotia, an order of baronets founded in 1625 to raise money and to help colonize Nova Scotia.
