Visit Wisbech and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:

Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. Wisbech stands on the River Nene almost 12 miles from the sea. At one time it was only 4 miles away but changes in the river patterns have altered its position in relation to the Wash. Unlike March whose church is perhaps the main reason for a visit to the town, the architectural beauties of Wisbech lie in its domestic buildings.

As you stand on the bridge over the Nene North Brink extends to the west, the impression is of an anglicized Deift with the terrace of mainly Georgian houses providing variety without sacrificing unity. The most famous of the buildings on the bank of the river is Peckover House, built in the 1720s and an important example of domestic architecture of the period. It is now in the care of the National Trust and you may see inside fine examples of decorative work in plaster and wood. The garden contains a number of rare trees, including one of the largest Maidenhair trees in the country and a glasshouse containing orange trees.

After the Friends Meeting House and a group of gabled houses a number of smaller houses lead to the buildings of the North Brink Brewery. Though North Brink is the more photographed and famous side, South Brink on the opposite bank is hardly less charming. Close to the bridge stands the monument designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott to Thomas Clarkson, one of the fighters for the abolition of the slave trade.

Still active as a port Wisbech is the centre of the agricultural and flower-growing industries of fenland. In the late spring of each year, usually at the end of May, the town is the centre of various routes through surrounding orchards. These routes, which are usually signposted, enable the motorist to see as much as possible of the beauties of the spring blossoms and at the same time avoid the heavy traffic on the main roads.

The large Church of SS. Peter and Paul has the unusual feature of twin naves and aisles. The tower built in the 16th century contains a host of sculptural detail and within the church is the monumental brass to Sir Thomas de Braunstone, an armoured figure some 7 ft long.
