Westbury, Wiltshire . Once, it is thought, the palace of the kings of Wessex stood on the moated site at Palace Green. Later Westbury became known for its wool trade and glove-making. It is a charming small town. Georgian houses are grouped round the Market Place and more are to be found near the church, which is mainly Perpendicular and was restored in 1847. Inside are an interesting modern rood-screen, 17th- and l8th-century monuments, and a chained copy of the Paraphrase of the New Testament by Erasmus.

High above Westbury stands the oldest White Horse in Wiltshire, said originally to have commemorated King Alfred's victory over the Danes in the 9th century. It was a carthorse, until “a wretch by the name of Gee”, steward to Lord Abingdon, remodelled it in 1778, as he thought, more elegantly. The horse measured some 180 ft in length and 107 ft in height to the shoulder.

The small hamlet of Dilton is close to Westbury and well worth visiting to see the Church of St Mary. Probably built in the 14th or 15th century and now painted white, the interior is delightful. The church remains just as it was in the 18th century, with box pews, some allotted to particular families, a three-tier pulpit and small galleries all completely unchanged.
