Washington, Tyne and Wear. A new town rose upon this former colliery village. Streets of old miners' houses were demolished, pit-head buildings converted to a museum, and the pit heap moved away. All this is took place round the original town centre where stands the Old Hall, a medieval building greatly altered in the 17th century. It housed the ancestors of George Washington, first president of the United States. The Washingtons, under many spellings of the name, were lords of the manor here from 1183 to 1376, when they moved to Sulgrave in Northamptonshire. Their arms, three stars and two stripes, provided the inspiration for the American flag. Gifts from America helped restore the hall, a National Trust property.
