Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway. This royal and municipal burgh at the head of the remarkable natural harbour of Loch Ryan, well placed for trade with northern Ireland, is a busy seaport connecting Scotland with Belfast. But there is ample room in Loch Ryan for other shipping, yachts, fishing boats, small craft and water-skiing. The old town has attractive winding streets, but Stranraer has become one of the most popular seaside resorts in southern Scotland, with numerous hotels and guest houses, an 18-hole golf course, all the other outdoor and indoor sports, trout and sea fishing. There are two fine beaches, and the town caters specially for children with a magnificent marine lake.

The Castle, a structure of the mid-l6th century, commands a fine view from its parapet walk; it was a headquarters of Graham of Claverhouse, and many Covenanters lay and perished in its dungeons. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Castle served as the town gaol.

Craigcaffie Tower, built in 1570, lies 3½ miles North East of Stranraer, and was a seat of the Neilsons. It is a well-preserved example of its kind, with stone gargoyles; the Neilsons claimed descent from John, son of Neil, Earl of Carrick, to whom the land of Kellechaffe (Craigcaffie) was granted by Robert Bruce.

Corsewall Point lighthouse, 9 miles North of Stranraer, was built by the grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson.
