Spilsby, Lincolnshire. A pleasant little market town on the edge of the Wolds and overlooking an expanse of marsh and fens towards the North Sea. The graceful market cross, with its restored centre part and 600-year-old base, denotes the town's receipt of its charter through Sir William de Willoughby in the 14th century. With the merging of the Willoughby and d'Eresby families the parish church became for many centuries the repository of their memorials, the oldest of these being the stone tomb of John, 2nd Baron Willoughby d'Eresby, who died in 1349, three years after he had fought at Crécy. Also in the church is a tablet in remembrance of Sir John Franklin, the Spilsby-born explorer, who met his death in 1847 in the Arctic while in command of the expedition which first discovered the North West Passage. A statue of him stands in the Market Place. Much of the old church has been lost in renovations, but the unusual 15th-century tower in green sandstone remains.
