Shaftesbury, Dorset. The county's only hill-top town, it has a long history. It was a West Saxon fortified town; King Alfred gave it a nunnery in c. 880, with his daughter, Ethelgiva, its first abbess, and an Anglo-Saxon town grew round it. To the abbey in 981 Edward the Martyr (see Corfe Castle) was brought for burial. It became one of the richest in the area, with an immense church, but after the Dissolution was destroyed. Its foundations can be inspected West of the Market Place.

Falling steeply South from St Peter's Church, the ancient, wide, curved and cobbled Gold Hill is probably the most photographed street in Dorset. St Peter's Church, early 15th-century, has an elaborately carved north parapet, some l5th-century glass and a crypt which was for long the next-door pub's cellar. Two other remarkable things: in the Grosvenor Hotel the Chevy Chase Sideboard, lavishly carved from a single piece of oak, and, in the Town Hall, the Byzant which was used till 1830 in rites connected with the town's need at that time to cart all its water up from the foot of the hill.
