Rudston, East Riding of Yorkshire. Another uncanny monolith, but larger than the Devils Arrows at Borough Bridge, stands in the churchyard. It measures 25 ft 4 in. high, 6 ft wide and 2 ft 3 in. thick at the base. It may be as deep into the ground as it is high, but this is a guess. Since the nearest quarry would be 40 miles away, it is believed that the stone was deposited here by glacial action and then erected on this hill by prehistoric men for reasons not now discoverable. The circular churchyard encloses All Saints, which surveys the Yorkshire Wolds 5 miles West of Bridlington. It has a thick west Norman tower with most of the fabric Decorated, and restored in 1861. The Norman font is circular with diaper pattern carving South West towards Kilham, the site of a Roman villa was uncovered by a ploughman in 1933. Three fine tessellated pavements from here are now in the Hull Transport Museum. The largest is 13 ft by 10 ft 6 in. and shows a bulging Venus with flying hair holding an apple and a mirror, the artist's conception of Venus at her bath. Leopards, hunters and birds are arranged around her. The stone, the pavements and the church speak of occupation stretching over thousands of years. Winifred Holtby, the novelist and journalist, was buried here in 1935. Her South Riding was the East Riding.
