Visit Newport and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:

Newport, Isle of Wight, the commercial capital, is on the River Medina which cuts the island into East Wight and West Wight, from North to South. Quite large vessels sail up into the busy harbour, a distance of some 5 miles from Cowes on the north coast. The French sacked the town in 1377, and Charles I held talks with the Cromwellian commissioners, which resulted in the abortive Treaty of Newport, 1648. The town sent representatives to Westminster for nearly 300 years, among them the Duke of Wellington, Lord Palmerston and George Canning. The town has many historic buildings. The Old Grammar School (1619) was the lodging for King Charles. Other old houses are God's Providence House (1701), the Chantry House (1612), and the Castle Inn. The present Parish Church of St Thomas the Apostle has a line Jacobean oak pulpit and a splendid peal of eight bells, both saved from the original church. Here can be seen the monument by Marochetti, in Carrara marble, to Princess Elizabeth, Charles I's second daughter, who at the age of 15 died in captivity at Carisbrooke Castle. The Guildhall designed by John Nash is now used for legal business and Quarter and other Sessions. There is a Roman villa in Avondale Road.
