Longniddry, East Lothian. A village just inland from the Firth of Forth, Longniddry lies some 12 miles from Edinburgh by road. It was a coal-mining village for five centuries, but mining ceased in 1924. It also used to be a centre for weaving, but now with its good communications (it is on the main East-coast railway line), it is almost a dormitory town for Edinburgh. There is a golf course and a rocky beach, with good views across to Fife, and West up the Forth estuary.

Longniddry House stood at the South West of the village, but now only a circular mound and subterranean vaults remain.

To the East of the village is Gosford House, the home of the Earl of Wemyss. Little can be seen of the house from the road, but the trees behind the policy wall on the coast road grow at an angle of 30 degrees, blown by the prevailing wind, and are a botanical curiosity.

The mansion was built by Robert Adam, and is considered to be one of the best examples of his work, although the effect of its three great arched windows has been altered by the later addition of an arcade to the front. It has a magnificent marble hall, a double staircase, and a picture gallery, and is surrounded by fine parkland.
