Laxey. Isle of Man. This picturesque tidal harbour town on the east coast is dominated by ‘Lady Isabella’, the largest water-wheel in the world: 72½ ft across and capable of raising 250 gal. of water a minute more than 1ooo ft. The wheel, set in motion in 1854, was named after the wife of the island's Lieutenant Governor. It was used to keep the nearby lead mines free from water, and though the mines are now closed the wheel still turns. It is from 1axey that the electric train starts its 4-mile journey to the summit of Snaefell, the island's highest mountain.
