Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland. This pastoral village near the River Wansbeck has cottages of a tawny stone around a small, low-walled meadow opposite the church. Rolling farmlands seem to seal the village off from the bustle of the nearby road to Carter Bar. An early l9th century bridge spans the Wansbeck. One of the vicars at St Bartholomew's Church was the Rev. John Hodgson who wrote most of his County History of Northumberland while he was here. The church has a generally make-do-and-mend air (for example, a plain Georgian window is stuck into the chancel wall). It is a puzzle as to dates but is basically 13th century in style with later alterations. A monument to Gawen Aynsley, who died in 1750, and his wife should give pause to all who take the trouble to read it. They were, it reports: “Kind to their children. Humane to their servants. Obliging to their neighbours. Friendly, just, and courteous to all. Religious without superstition. Charitable without ostentation. Lovers and practisers of virtue.” The churchyard contains the grave of Sir Charles Algernon Parsons, inventor of the steam turbine, who died in 1931.
