Kilmartin, Argyll and Bute The village and church of Kilmartin date from the mid l9th century, but there is much evidence of very early settlement in the district, which is fertile and is on the meeting of the routes from the West coast and Loch Fyne and Loch Awe.

Various prehistoric remains can be found nearby. These include three large cairns South of the village, and near Nether Largie. The one to the South was originally 130 ft in diameter and contains a chamber 20 ft long and 3 ft wide with corbelled walls covered with huge slabs. The one to the North is 70 ft in diameter with a capstone carved on the underside with bronze axes and cup-marks.

At Balnacraig 1 mile South South-East of Kilmartin are cup-and-ring marks on the rock faces in an exceptionally good state of preservation. To the South West of Nether Largie cairns is the Temple Wood stone circle.

In Kilmartin churchyard there are an interesting collection of grave-slabs and fragments of at least two crosses; one shows Christ crucified on the obverse and Christ in Majesty on the reverse. These date from the 16th century, but the influence of the l2th century ivory work- is evident.

Some 2 miles North of Kilmartin is Carnasserie Castle on a commanding hill above the road. It consists of a tower-house and a hall-house, both built in the 16th century, and was the home of John Carswell, the first Protestant Bishop of the Isles, who published Knox’s liturgy translated into Gaelic in 1567. This is the first book to have been printed in Scotland’s most ancient tongue. The castle was captured and partly blown up in 1685.
