Ingram, Northumberland. A Northumberland National Park information centre and the park's only camping site, 400 acres in extent, are on the outskirts of this village in the broad Breamish valley where the river flows over a stony bed. It is a popular weekend destination for the citizens of Newcastle. St Michael's Church which stands opposite the information centre, has parts dating from the 11th to the 19th century. The oldest survival may be the plain and heavy tower arch and the tower itself is of Norman date, later restored. The church was burnt by Scots raiders in the late 13th century and the lead roof stripped off by another party in 1578. By the mid-l7th century the church was in ruinous condition, and little wonder. In Ingram church, the relics include tombstones in the chancel floor and a carved fragment, the feet, of an effigy of a cleric. Upstream the Breamish valley narrows and fills with heather, bracken, birch and hawthorn trees. Many prehistoric earthworks can be found hereabout. The prehistoric village of Greaves Ash is near Linhope Spout, a 56-ft waterfall 1½ miles uphill from the hamlet of Linhope, which is 3½ miles upstream from Ingram.
