Girvan, South Ayrshire. This is a pleasant and prosperous holiday resort 21 miles South of Ayr, lying on the coast road at the mouth of the River Girvan. The origins of the place go back to prehistoric times, when it appears to have been of considerable importance. Knockcushion, which overlooks the harbour, was once a fort-hill and latterly a “moat” of justice and jurisdiction. The town was once an important fishing centre for the Clyde herring fleet. Girvan has much to offer the sportsman visitor, particularly the angler, being within easy reach of the River Girvan and the River Stinchar, and of at least one good loch. The River Girvan affords probably the best sea-trout fishing in the West of Scotland. About 2 miles South of the town is Ardmillan House, a 16th-century mansion where Mary Queen of Scots really did stay (in August 1563).

Nearby towns: Ayr, Ballantrae, Maybole, Newton Stewart
