Egremont, Cumbria, on the A595, near the pleasant area of St Bees, is an industrial town producing plastic and leather goods. Here Wordsworth found inspiration. In 1806 he wrote “The Horn of Egremont Castle”, “... which none could sound ...Save He who came as rightful Heir”. This castle, of the House of Lucie, was built about 1140 to uphold Norman rule, but was destroyed in the 16th century and is now a ruin. St Mary's is on the site of a church believed to date from the 12th century. It is late 19th-century but includes early features.
