Dudley, West Midlands, is called the “Capital of the Black Country”, with some justification, as it was here in the 17th century that coal was first used for smelting iron, and its vast ironworks have prospered ever since, it lies 9 miles West of Birmingham and is almost surrounded by Staffordshire, in which county its newer districts lie. From the keep of its Norman castle the panorama extends over seven counties, often smoke-hazed. There is an interesting 14th-century barbican to be seen and two drum towers. Its courtyard is surrounded by a l4th-century wall, over 8 ft thick in places, which has defied time and attack. Within the grounds is an excellent zoo with over 450 species, including rare fish. A chairlift brings visitors up the 200-ft slopes on which the castle stands. Below the castle are great limestone caverns which have not been quarried since the early 1920s. Wren's Nest is a geological nature reserve of great importance. It is the classical source of fossils from the Upper Silurian Dudley limestone. Over 300 species of fossil fauna are represented and they are at least 330 million years old. They were first studied here in 1686. Just across the county line is the excellent early 19th-century Church of St Thomas dominating the town from the heights and well worth visiting.
