Dornoch, Highland. The royal burgh of Dornoch (created 1628) is the county town of Sutherland, and was once the seat of the bishops of Caithness. The cathedral is now a parish church; it was built in the early 13th century on the site of what had been the centre of a Culdee community since the 6th century. It was much damaged in 1570; the nave was rebuilt in 1835—7, and the whole wall was restored in 1924. Sixteen earls of Sutherland are said to be buried here. The church has a statue of the 1st Duke (d. 1833) and an effigy of Sir Richard de Moravia, brother of Gilbert the founder, killed by the Danes at Embo in 1248.

Dornoch possesses a world-renowned golf course, which is long established even for Scotland, having been played on in the early 17th century. Holiday visitors will also find good sandy beaches.

In a garden near the lower links of the town is a stone to mark the spot of the last judicial execution of a witch in Scotland, in 1722. She was Janet Horn, who was tarred, feathered, and roasted, being accused of having turned her daughter into a pony and having her shod by the devil.

Some 4 miles West of Dornoch is Skibo estate, which once belonged to the bishops of Caithness, later to the Mackays, and in the 18th century to George Dempster, the “improver”. Dempster, though he came originally from the Lowlands, was one of the most humane and far-seeing of Scots at the time of the “Clearance and Evictions”. Later Skibo was the home of Andrew Carnegie, who built the present Castle as a holiday residence in the early part of this century.
