Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria, was the old capital of the Furness district. Its castle, of which the l4th century tower remains in the main street, was the Court House of the Abbot of St Mary, but after the Dissolution the district’s trade gradually passed to Ulverston. During the 19th century Dalton became important again while its iron-ore mines were busy, but did not regain its position as the market town of Furness George Romney, the portrait painter, was born in a house called Beckside nearby in 1734, and worked with his father, a cabinet-maker, at a house at High Cocken. He was apprenticed to Steele, an artist, at Kendal, before achieving fame in London, particularly with portraits of Emma Hart, later Lady Hamilton. He died at Kendal in 1802 and was buried at Dalton, in the parish churchyard.

Urswick, to the East, has the Church of St Mary where a rush-bearing ceremony is still performed. Three dolorosas on the west wall were almost completely destroyed by Cromwellians. There is an organ-grinder and monkey carved in wood, a well-carved font top, a three-decker pulpit, fragments of a 9th century Anglo-Saxon cross, and a Viking cross with runic inscriptions. The church has a massive tower as well as box pews.
