Cley Next the Sea, Norfolk. Cley is situated on the North Coast Road (A149) some way inland from the sea and on the east bank of the River Glaven. At one time it was a busy and prosperous little port but embankments built in the 17th century led to its decline. The village itself has many small flint-built houses along narrow streets. The Church of St Margaret South of the village is large and impressive with a remarkable clerestory composed of alternate circular and arched windows. The Perpendicular south porch is finely proportioned with a traceried parapet. The south transept which has been in ruins for centuries has a beautifully traceried window and inside the Galilee porch west of the tower is an equally beautiful doorway. Inside the church is some fine woodwork and brasses, while the churchyard contains, as at Blakeney, some carved l8th-century tombstones.

Perhaps the most picturesque sight in Cley is the windmill which dates from 1713 and stands like a sentinel over the great expanse of marshes which lie between it and the sea. The shingle beach is at the end of a long road across these flats. The front of the Post Office is apparently built with the ground-up bones of horses and cattle.
