Cheddar, Somerset. Cheddar Gorge. For the best part of a mile pale-grey limestone cliffs rise up vertically, or nearly so, to 450 ft and more on either side of the road. A hundred years ago it must have been tremendously wild and exciting. Now it is the most commercialized natural phenomenon in the West Country. It looks best approached from the North, and in the daytime probably the most spectacular view is from the top of the cliffs, most simply reached by “Jacob's Ladder” at the north end. The two main caves, Cox's and Gough's, contain fine stalagmites and stalactites. Bones of possibly cannibalistic prehistoric men have been found in them, and also Roman coins. Everything costs money except driving straight through or finding, from the north end of the gorge, a path to the top of the cliffs.

At the south end is the relatively old village of Cheddar, which has a good market cross and rather grand 14th- to l5th-century church with fine tower, tie-beam roof and excellent l5th-century carved-stone pulpit. Behind Manor Farm are the ruins of a medieval chapel near which there have been recent excavations in search of Cheddar's one-time Anglo-Saxon palace.

Cheddar cheese was made in local farm-houses from the 12th century at the latest. As a cottage industry it still exists, but only just. The factory product of various other parts of Somerset is different. Apart from tourism, Cheddar's main industries now are market gardening (especially strawberries) and limestone quarrying. In the late 18th century its squalor was the inspiration for Hannah Moore's pioneer social work. Her cottage headquarters in Venn's Close are now used by the Red Cross and as an old people's centre.
