Blackheath, Greater London. This high and windy common has been named and in use at least since 1381, when Wat Tyler's rebels gathered there before attacking London, and Jack Cade's followed suit in 1405. Early in the 17th century golf was introduced to England by James I on the course laid out on Blackheath. The club still exists but has moved. In the 18th century The Paragon, a fine Georgian crescent, was built on the south-east corner of the heath, and other Georgian houses are to be found in Dartmouth and Montpelier Rows. Near The Paragon is Morden College, which was built by Wren around 1700 at the behest of Sir John Morden, who was a rich merchant of Aleppo. It is and always has been not a college but an almshouse; it stands in its own grounds and has some Lely portraits.

On the north side of the heath where it joins Greenwich Park, Ranger's House also stands in its own grounds. It is a pleasant, early-l8th-century building with splendid rose gardens, and was once owned by the Earl of Chesterfield. Blackheath church has a spire of such refined height that it is sometimes called the “Needle of Kent”. The A2, the Dover road, cleaves a line right across the middle of Blackheath.
