Axminster, Devon. Famous for its carpets, Axminster was one of the first West Saxon settlements in Devon (late 7th century) and is now a small market town. It has an attractive centre, with a green shaded by elms, cedars and yews, an outwardly handsome church and good coaching pubs, like the 18th-century George. The carpet industry was founded in 1755, in the building immediately North East of the church, by Thomas Whitty who had carefully studied Turkish methods. In 1835 the business was sold to a Wilton weaver, and no more carpets were made in the town till a new factory was opened in 1937.

2 ½ miles South West, Musbury from the 15th to the 18th century was the seat of the Drake family, cousins of Sir Francis. In the church the painted effigies of three generations of Drakes kneel as if in their pews. Ashe House nearby has been claimed as the place where John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, was born to Elizabeth Drake and her husband Winston Churchill. A more likely birthplace is Trill, a few miles off, as Ashe House had been burnt in the Civil War; but John Churchill was baptized in the private chapel of Ashe House. The old house no longer exists, having been burnt again in 1778, and subsequently dismantled; the new house is in private hands.
