Alwinton, Northumberland. An unusual split-level church with a tall west end and pointed bell turret stands on a hillside South of this hamlet tucked into a hollow of the Cheviot Hills where the Alwin and the Coquet rivers meet. The Church of St Michael has remnants of its original fabric dating from the late 11th century, but most of it is 13th-century, considerably restored in the 19th. The chancel is 10 steps above the nave, and a crypt housing Selby family tombs is under the elevated portion. Clennell table tombs are in the north aisle. The path leading to the church door is paved with interesting gravestones and it leads through a well-kept churchyard with a good view of the gently rounded hills. Near the gate is a little stone-roofed stable where the parish hearse is stored. It was bought in 1840 for £9 and is rarely used today for lack of horses strong enough to pull it. The handsome wooden body surmounted by an urn stands on wheels large enough to pass through fords or deep snows. There is good angling and walking in the vicinity, and the Coquet river-bed has been known to yield agates, cornelians and pebble crystals. One walk follows old Clennell Street, the drovers' road, to the Scottish border at Russell's Cairn on top of Windy Gyle, 2,034 ft high. The cairn is named after Lord Francis Russell who was murdered by Scots at a border meeting in 1585. Sir Walter Scott stayed at the Rose and Thistle in Alwinton when he was working on Rob Roy. Alwinton has a famous sheep show and hound trials each October. There are remains of prehistoric camps and earthworks in the area.
