Amersham, Buckinghamshire, has a population of around 20,000. The town's name was Agmondesham in pre-Saxon times. It has changed to Elmodesham when it was noted in the Domesday book in 1086. It was worth the princely sum of £9! In 1200, King John granted the town a market and fair. The town holds the fair every year in September. The market still opens every Tuesday in Amersham on the Hill.

As result of the Reformation in 16th Century people were burnt at the stake due to their religious beliefs. A memorial on the hill above the town commemorates this event. The martyrs were Lollards who believed in reading the Bible, saying mass in English rather than Latin, and the freedom to worship and not accept the doctrines of the Catholic church.

Some of Amersham's historical architecture still remains: today, there are houses that date back to the mid 15th century and the Market Hall is dated at 1682.
