Swaffham, Norfolk, a busy market town situated at the junction of the A47 and A1065 roads. Legend tells of the “Pedlar of Swaffham” who dreamed that if he travelled to London he would find treasure. Travel he did, and met a man who told him that he, in his turn, had had a dream that if he went to a village called Swaffham he would find treasure beneath a certain tree. The pedlar returned home, dug away and found riches which enabled him to build the north aisle of the great Church of SS. Peter and Paul. The pedlar is to be seen in the village sign, in a monument in the market place and in several carvings in the church.

The little town has a triangular market place with a “market cross” - in this case not a cross but a domed rotunda built in 1783 by the Earl of Oxford. A number of good Georgian houses may be seen, including School House. The Methodist Church dates from the early 19th-century, the Shire Hall from 1839.

The Church of SS. Peter and Paul is 15th-century with a grand tower completed in 1510. On the roof is a graceful flèche. The west doorway is deeply recessed with a great window above and the south porch has its own hammer-beam roof. Inside the church the eye is held by the fine arcading and in particular by the great double hammer-beam roof with angels, open-winged, at the ends of the brackets. The Swaffham Pedlar, together with his dog, may be seen at the end of the prayer desk, a reminder of the north aisle which he had caused to be built at about the same time that the tower was completed (1510).
