Yaxley, Cambridgeshire. On first appearance from the main road, this large and highly productive village has little to offer, but on turning down a side street you reach its Centre and discover many buildings of interest. There are several 17th and l8th century houses, many attractive black-and-white thatched cottages, a thatched inn, a village green and an old pump. The village school is dated 1812 and has large trees in its playground. The Congregational church and the Methodist church are both early Victorian, as are a number of the houses.
St Peter's Church is on the top of a hill. It is large, cruciformed and its elegant steeple has flying buttresses. It is mostly l3th century with some Perpendicular workmanship, and the chancel and transepts are of different roof levels. The font is original and the fine oak chancel screen is of the 15th century. Above the screen is a large organ gallery and case by Temple Moore, 1904, who restored the church. The Perpendicular stalls are kneeling-desks with poppyheads on the ends and panels in front. The pulpit with a sounding board is dated 1631. In the north transept is a monument showing two arms holding a heart, representing a heart burial and attributed to William de Yaxley, Abbot of Thorney.
On the outskirts of the village are several old farms.
