Writtle, Essex. Now almost part of Chelmsford, it was from the village of Writtle that Marconi sent out his first broadcasts. He had come to England from Bologna, and his radio factory, the first in the world, led to the subsequent developments in telegraphic and broadcasting techniques. Here, too, is one of the most famous village greens in the county, framed by some fine houses and to the South, the Church of All Saints. The west tower was rebuilt in 1802 and the l3th century body of the church in 1879. Among the monuments is one by Nicholas Stone to Sir Edward Pinchon (1629) — a remarkable work, with harvest symbols crowned by an angel standing on a rock. There are brasses in plenty, many of them 16th century, and fine carving on stalls and benches.
On either side of the church stand beautiful houses: Aubyns, a half-timbered house dating from the early 16th century, and Mundays, a plastered 1lth century house. Excavations at King John's Castle brought to light traces of buildings of the 13th to 15th centuries, perhaps a link with the fabled palace of King John, and Robert Bruce of Scotland, who, legend has it, was born in these parts.
