Wilmslow, Cheshire. Here is a small town which is outwardly a modern shopping centre and also a dormitory area for Manchester, but behind the appearance of modernity there is much that connects Wilmslow with the past. Intolerance of one kind or another was a characteristic of Cheshire people for centuries and the Quaker Meeting House in the town was often the scene in the 17th century of cruel persecutions against a sect which refused to conform to the established church. Wilmslow is also the town of Samuel Finney, the portrait painter who became a special favourite of Queen Caroline. In his Historical Survey of the Parish of Wilmslow he railed against the drunkenness and disorder which was prevalent there in the 18th century. Later, when he became a magistrate, he put down hooliganism with such firmness that Wilmslow has wryly claimed a reputation for respectability ever since.
Wilmstow lies in a deep valley of the Bollin river which has its source near Shuttlings Low and flows through some 20 miles of extremely beautiful country before eventually finding its way into the Mersey near Heatley. On the banks of the river is Wilmslow church with its fine tower and sombre walls dating mainly from the 16th century, as does the splendid oak roof of the chancel. Under two arches are monuments to Humphrey Newton and his wife, which have been here for 400 years, and the brass in front of the altar, a memorial to Robert Booth of Dunham and his lady, is the oldest in Cheshire.
